Better, Broader, Safer: How to enable secure external data sharing, while respecting privacy and retaining control

The Goldacre Review laid out a framework for the secure sharing of data within the NHS, with recommendations on how to build secure platforms to enable data to be shared for research purposes while respecting patient confidentiality and information governance requirements.

In this talk, we'll share our key learnings from building Trusted Research Environments and the considerations which you can apply to your own data processing. We'll walk through our reference architecture and explain the controls and processes used to secure data, and how those can be used to federate data to third parties.

We'll relate this to a broader view around the evolution of cloud data tooling, explaining how we've applied the same principles to industries outside of healthcare, and across each of the major cloud providers. You'll come away from the session with a wider view of best-practice tooling and approaches, and also practical, real-world advice on how to apply it in your circumstances.

Unlocking Potential: Fine-Grained Data Security for Enhanced Internal Data Sharing

The ability to share data internally is pivotal for innovation and operational efficiency, and as organizations expand their teams across borders, sharing data while complying with complex regional regulations and compliance standards becomes an increasingly daunting challenge. Concerns over data security and privacy can impede or completely stall projects. But, these concerns can be addressed and projects unblocked by implementing appropriate fine-grained data security and access control mechanisms.

This session will delve into the importance of implementing robust data security frameworks to facilitate safe and efficient internal data sharing. Participants will explore the latest trends and technologies in data security, data products, and attribute-based access control (ABAC), and how to leverage them to create dynamic, secure environments for data sharing and data product development.

Through real-world examples and case studies, attendees will gain insights into best practices for balancing data accessibility with security, enabling their organizations to unlock the full potential of their data assets while safeguarding sensitive information. This session is essential for IT professionals, data managers, and business leaders looking to enhance their organization's data sharing capabilities without compromising security.

Engineering the Future: Data & Climate Change

Climate change is one of the most profound challenges for humanity. It’s the role of Engineering Consultants to design a new sustainable built environment; one that’s free from polluting energy systems and wasted resources piling up in landfill, that minimises its carbon footprint, and can manage rising temperatures and extreme weather events. Drew and Joseph present the evolution of an Engineer's methods and how data are accelerating our capabilities and driving progress to Net-Zero.

We dive into the engaging narrative of "Information in Engineering" that charts the course from the tactile past of manual paper drawings and calculations, through PDFs and sprawling excel docs, to today's cloud-enabled BIM (Building Information Modelling) and GIS (Geospatial Information Systems). Each new way of working has brought about a step change in efficiency and accuracy, but not without challenges. The journey then continues forward with a roadmap for the future of "Information in Engineering" and its transformative power in fighting climate change. Common data environments will serve as the foundations for centralising sustainability domain information, with open data at its core.

Digital processes are not just vital to information security and staff productivity, but harnessing the power of data also unlocks a myriad of opportunities for advanced analytic insights and AI solutions, such as design optimisation. This presentation concludes with examples of how open data and AI can combine to bring tangible positive impacts on climate change.

The CDO Evolution: How Behavioural Data is Shaping Company Strategy

In the dynamic landscape of modern business, the transformative potential of data science rests on the foundation of high-quality, granular actionable behavioural data. Yet, despite this critical role, Data Science teams often struggle to assert their influence within marketing departments who demand a culture of self-serve data and analytics.

This session will explore the critical role of data in driving effective data science initiatives and shaping marketing strategies. Alex will discuss unlocking the true value of customer behavioural data through improved data quality, governance, and utilisation in the cloud data warehouse. This fuels next-gen AI, customer segmentation for personalised experiences, and advanced analytics, paving the way for informed decision-making, innovation, and scalability.

Drawing on real-world examples and industry insights across companies like Burberry, Strava and Auto Trader, we will navigate the challenges faced by data teams in establishing themselves as integral players in marketing discussions. From advocating for data quality and integrity to fostering cross-functional collaboration and communication, we will provide actionable strategies for ensuring that data science teams are not only recognised but actively engaged in shaping marketing strategies.

Join us to discover how to empower your data science teams to unlock the full potential of customer behavioural data and drive marketing success.
